Not every SUV or truck labeled "rugged" is actually built for serious off-road use. If trail driving is a priority, a few key specs matter more than styling.
Ground clearance, approach and departure angles, and a true 4WD low-range gearing system (rather than just AWD) all play a role in real off-road capability. Skid plates and locking differentials are additional features worth seeking out if you plan to tackle rougher terrain regularly.
It's also worth considering tire size and type, since factory all-season tires often aren't ideal for serious trail use. Many off-road-focused trims come with more aggressive tires already fitted from the factory.
